Recent events around the Strait of Hormuz are a sharp reminder that force majeure clauses are not boilerplate. In upstream oil and gas, disruption to shipping routes, supply chains, services, equipment movement or project schedules can quickly become a contractual problem — but the commercial outcome depends on the exact wording of the contract.
This free class will use the Strait of Hormuz as a practical context for rethinking force majeure provisions in oil and gas contracts. The session will focus on the questions procurement, contracts, commercial and technical professionals should be able to ask before a crisis occurs: what events are covered, what level of disruption is required, what notices must be given, what obligations are affected, and what happens to time, cost, liability and termination rights.
The session is not intended as an exhaustive legal analysis of current geopolitical events. It is a practical contracting discussion about how force majeure clauses operate when performance becomes delayed, restricted, unsafe or impossible.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of why force majeure drafting matters, how unclear wording can affect commercial outcomes, and which parts of the clause deserve closer attention in upstream oil and gas contracting.
And other non-legal specialists, who have exposure to revenue generating or procurement contracts as part of their roles (in upstream operators, suppliers and contractors)
